So what is an Apé (pronounced “ah-pay”)? Dating back to World War II, many Italians were badly affected by the war and lacked the financial means to purchase a full-size four wheeled vehicle. An idea created by Corradino D'Ascanio, later picked up and supported by Enrico Piaggio, to design a lighter weight three-wheeled commercial vehicle acted as a jumpstart to the economic reconstruction. The first Apé was produced in 1948.
An Apé’s (which means “Bee” in Italian) compact size made it the perfect vehicle to navigate the narrow streets of Italy, acting as a workhorse delivery vehicle or an impromptu market stall to serve as the front-end of local businesses. Today, the vehicles are still common across the globe for various purposes, including our mobile tap truck!
